The Haven Resort, Ipoh

Our road trip around parts of Peninsular Malaysia would obviously mean things were a little less relaxed than our chilled out month in Phuket. So we decided to plan in a hotel treat. Although we would still be driving around and unpacking and repacking, we could unwind with a couple of luxuries…mostly meaning buffet breakfast. I love a hotel buffet breakfast and our tribe absolutely demolish everything in sight so it always turns out to be pretty good value!

Booking The Haven Resort in Ipoh was an easy choice for us as it comes with the hotel perks – pool, room cleaning, all important breakfast – but their suites also include living space, large balconies and a kitchen. Combined, this all makes it perfect for family stays; practical but with a bit of luxury.

Although we arrived with fairly high expectations, The Haven blew us away. The limestone cliffs and jungle views were spectacular, the pool and resort facilities were beautiful and the staff were all amazing.

The resort offers a wide range of facilities and activities (some on request in advance), including paint balling, a zip line and obstacle course, indoor and outdoor kids play areas and a fantastic spa. Their pool is perfect for families as it is split into different levels; offering a wading pool, kids area with a slide, jacuzzi and bubble jet areas in the main pool. There are also a range of areas around the resort to explore, like a tree house and relaxation terrace. We loved walking around the lake each day, spotting monitor lizards, marvelling at the limestone cliff and reading about each type of plant growing there. It led to a great few days of homeschooling for us, as well as being really relaxing.

As we were sticking to our travel budget, we self catered for some of our stay (there are large supermarkets nearby as well as smaller local markets), and we went into Ipoh to eat as well. When we did stay in The Haven, we were really impressed with the food at their restaurant Cuisines. They focus on healthy and market fresh food, with a good range of local Malaysian dishes and some well cooked international options. Their tradition laksa was amazing! There are some specials only available on certain days which gives a bit of variety if you were eating in for a long stay. This also applies to breakfast where they offer a smaller buffer and a fabulous  ‘cooked to order’ menu through the week, but on weekends and busier periods, the full buffet is available with rotating specials.

It was an absolutely amazing stay and we would completely recommend it to other families. We were made to feel extremely welcome and it was such a fun, easy and beautiful place to spend time in, while still feeling like we were experiencing Malaysia.

The Haven Resorts also has another facility in Bintan Malaysia, www.lagoibayhaven.com, set among beaches and mangroves, which looks beautiful and where I’m sure the same fantastic family approach has been used.

You can also purchase suites at both resort as holiday homes or for investment purposes.
