Kathu Waterfall

Phuket is mostly about the beaches, with a few temples and elephants for good measure. However, because we had a full month there, we had time to research some other things to do.

Kathu Waterfalls comes up on the internet with mixed reviews (actually really bad reviews on TripAdvisor). The bigger waterfalls are Bang Pae and Ton Sai, but they were a bit far away from where we were staying in Rawai and looked like there might a bit more walking involved than we were keen on doing! So we decided to give Kathu a go.

When you arrive, there is just a small parking area next to a bridge, with a few places selling drinks and possibly food later in the day. Walk over the bridge and you come to a shelter and steps leading down to the water. The waterfall isn’t an impressive, rushing fall, more like a series of small falls with pools to paddle in and rocks to clamber over. It is very pretty though!

You can head off up the track next to the falls and trek further to find more falls and jungle. We are not really the trekking sort though if I’m honest and no one wanted to lug Bertie all the way or listen to Arthur and Eirlys (and probably Tom) whinging about being tired, so we just stayed at the first level pools.

We had a fantastic time swimming and climbing over the rocks. Bertie was a bit unsure at first, but he soon settled in to splashing about. We had packed his life jacket, but the water wasn’t deep. He needed holding anyway if he wandered off, as where the water rushed over the rocks was a bit dangerous for him. There were plenty of sandy spots in the shallows to sit him down in though. There is quite a bit of wildlife to spot; small fish, beautiful butterflies, enormous spiders, giant pond skaters and even friendly local puppies! The jungle setting makes it feel like a real adventure and it really was a fantastic experience.

If you are looking for a proper waterfall then you would probably be best heading to one of the larger falls, especially if you are in Phuket during the dry season as Kathu is apparently very shallow then. For a family morning out, a picnic, or just a walk in the jungle, Kathu was perfect!
